Virgin Media:
Newsroom (Social)

For a few months at RAPP, I was thrown into the whirlwind that is the Virgin Media social team (or ‘Newsroom’, as it’s known).

In short, this meant heading up everything from large social campaigns (based around the big entertainment events and stories), smaller social campaigns, reactive posts, one-off posts and the odd sing-along to Craig David.

#SuperSaints

As part of their ongoing partnership with Southampton FC, Virgin Media wanted to show Saints fans how they’re not just a sponsor of the club, they’re fans too. To highlight this, we created a series of social posts, showcasing the different kinds of fans Virgin Media are ‘marching with’. This lived across Twitter, Instagram Stories and as a grid on the Virgin Media Insta profile.

Craig David all over our bonk

To celebrate the arrival of Gig1 Fibre Broadband in Southampton (the first and currently only city to have it), Craig David was returning to play a one-off homecoming gig.

Our job? Use social to promote our ticket giveaway, as well as Gig1 Fibre.

As well as a series of promo posts and stories, we created a simple entry mechanic for people to win tickets – comment below and tell us which Craig David banger (and yes, they are all bangers) we’ve given the Gig1 treatment.

The bank holiday binge-a-thon

Ahhh bank holidays. Extra time to spend with family and friends. Crack on with some DIY. Escape the city and head to Brighton with every other Londoner.

Is it heck!

Who said a bank holiday meant having to go out and surround yourself with unnecessary stress? It’s the perfect opportunity to stay in and plough through that boxset everyone’s been raving about.

So, we dug out our calculators and got to work – figuring out exactly how much of your bank holiday weekend certain boxsets would take up.

Hai-clues

Japan. The birthplace of haikus. And home to the 2019 Rugby World Cup. To encourage some social interaction throughout the tournament, we used Instagram Stories’ quiz functionality to create a series of different ‘Hai-Clues’. All fans had to do was guess the player from the haiku provided. They then had the option to swipe up for fixtures.

Scrum predictor

As well as our Hai-Clues, we wanted to see who the nation was backing in the big games. So we created a series of rugby scrums that allowed the nation to back their favourite and show their support.

We like to think it played some part in England getting to the final.

ICYMI because of Love Island

For eight weeks, one topic seemed to be hotter than everything else – Love Island. And while Tommy Fury’s attempt at a cheese sandwich was (arguably) unmissable, what about all the other epicness going on at the same time?!

Luckily, Virgin Media was on it, giving people a run-down of the biggest stories to hit the world of sport, TV, film and gaming.

To make ourselves relevant to the conversation, our stories were also delivered in a way that was notoriously Love Island.
